It was a bittersweet decision to end my Witches of Cleopatra Hill series. Those books and I traveled a long and wonderful road together. But I knew that the events I’d set in motion with the introduction of the Escobar warlocks — the bad guys in the series — would have to come to a head at some point. Yes, I could vanquish those enemies and start another arc, but after fourteen books, I thought it was time to move on. Whenever you have a cast of characters as large as the one that included the three Arizona witch clans — the McAllisters, the Wilcoxes, the de la Paz family — there are always going to be threads that aren’t tied up neatly. And because Angela McAllister, the head witch of her clan, is pregnant with her third child in the final book of the series, well, that’s a pretty big thread to leave dangling.
Even as I was writing Darktide, the final book of the Witches of Cleopatra Hill series, though, I knew I’d want to tell the story of that unborn child. And that is how the Witches of Cleopatra Hill segue into the Witches of Canyon Road. The Canyon Road series picks up twenty-one years later, and features as its heroine Miranda McAllister, Angela’s daughter, who has to go live with the Castillo clan in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This gave me a chance to stay in the “world” I’d created for my witches, and yet have an entirely new location and new cast of characters (with a few cameos by characters from the Cleopatra Hill series). By doing this, I hoped to create a series that, while it has ties to the former books, can still be enjoyed by someone who hasn’t read any of the Witches of Cleopatra Hill series.
The adventure is just beginning on Canyon Road. I hope you’ll take that journey with me!
